It is the first national, standardized, publicly reported survey of patients' perspectives of hospital care in the United States. What Exactly Does the Survey Measure?

The survey is administered to a random sample of adult patients between 48 hours and six weeks after their discharge. It asks patients to evaluate their recent hospital stay across several critical domains of care:

• Communication with Nurses and Doctors: How often did medical staff listen carefully, explain things clearly, and treat the patient with courtesy and respect?
• Responsiveness of Hospital Staff: How quickly did staff respond to call buttons and requests for help?
• Cleanliness and Quietness: Were the patient rooms and bathrooms kept clean? Was the area around the patient's room quiet at night?
• Pain Management & Medication Communication: How well was pain controlled, and did staff explain the purpose and side effects of new medications?
• Discharge Information: Were patients given adequate information about what to do during their recovery at home?
